Two Stanley Consultants’ projects - Spurlock Unit 4 and OPPD Unit 2 - Named "Power Projects of the Year" Awards Finalists by Power Engineering magazine
MUSCATINE, Iowa - The editors of Power Engineering magazine and PennWell Corp. have announced finalists for the annual Projects of the Year Awards program.
Two of the three 2009 Best Coal-fired Project finalists are projects that Stanley Consultants’ had involvement with: East Kentucky Power Cooperative’s Spurlock Station Unit 4, and Omaha Public Power District’s OPPD Nebraska City Station Unit 2.
Spurlock Station Unit 4 is located at East Kentucky Power Cooperative’s (EKPC) Hugh L. Spurlock Station near Maysville, Kentucky. Spurlock Unit 4’s generation capacity (268 MW, net) was needed as a result of strong growth within EKPC’s 16 member cooperatives that buy wholesale power. These member cooperatives serve nearly 500,000 customers in 89 of Kentucky’s 120 counties. This new $528,000,000 plant will provide enough affordable, reliable electricity to power 140,000 homes. Stanley Consultants was the engineer of record for this project.
OPPD Nebraska City Station Unit 2 is located at Omaha Public Power District’s Nebraska City Station near Omaha, Nebraska. The unit began commercial production of electricity in May 2009. The gross generating capacity of this unit is 682-megawatts. Stanley Consultants was Owner’s Engineer on the project, along with another engineering firm.
"The world’s appetite for energy continues to grow," said Richard G. Baker, senior vice president of PennWell’s Power Generation Group. "Companies like those represented by this year’s project finalists are instrumental in meeting the growing demand. Power Engineering magazine is once again pleased to be able to recognize some of the exceptional power generation projects that were completed in the past year."
The Projects of the Year Awards winners will be announced at a gala awards banquet on Monday, Dec. 7, at the Las Vegas Hilton, as part of the POWER-GEN International Conference and Exhibition and the co-located NUCLEAR POWER International Conference and Exhibition.
